NEW CASTLE, Ind. – Coyote Motorsports team drivers added three World Karting Association Russell Karting Gold Cup Series feature wins to their season total Aug. 12-14 at New Castle Motorsports Park in Indiana, where another strong group of 4-cycle sprint racers gathered for the annual Coyote Motorsports Nationals.
Junior divisions
Lutz earned his second Gold Cup win of the year in the competitive Sportsman 2 Heavy division, which saw the Buffalo, N.Y.-area youngster drive to victory in an exciting main event over talented young racers from all over the eastern half of the country.
Lutz won the feature Sunday afternoon, a day after he finished sixth in a wild Sportsman 2 Lite main. One driver to best Lutz in the Sportsman 2 Lite 10-lap affair was Coyote pilot Sarah Luoma, who recorded one of her best national finishes with a fine third-place effort.
In a race that came down to the last lap with plenty of dueling and jockeying for position, Luoma kept her XP mount near the front but was narrowly edged by Maryland racers Trent Barnes and Tyler Frantz.
“The great thing about Gold Cup is the races are so exciting,” Lipari said, alluding to Coyote junior drivers’ efforts at New Castle. “Sarah and Jake did phenomenal jobs all weekend, as did our other young drivers like Joshua Stark, Ryan Bavineau, Tyler Orlop, the Stiefels and the Faucis. While Jake (Lutz) was the only Coyote junior to get a win, all of these kids were right there. In Gold Cup, a lot of times it comes down to the last lap and you could end up fifth or sixth as easily as you can end up first. It’s great racing, especially at New Castle.”
All the drivers Lipari mentioned ran well at New Castle. In Sportsman 1, the youngest category of racers at ages 7 to 10, Nick Fauci continued to improve in his first Gold Cup season. Fauci finished fifth in Sportsman 1 Heavy. Joshua Stark ran competitive to a pair of top-10 runs in Sportsman 1. Stark was seventh in Lite and sixth in the Heavy version of the class.
Tyler Stiefel scored a pair of seventh-place finishes in Sportsman 2, while Luoma kept her Coyote in the top five all weekend with the aforementioned third-place run in Sportsman 2 Lite and a fourth-place finish in Heavy.
Ryan Bavineau nearly had his first Gold Cup win at New Castle. He raced to a terrific second-place result in Restricted Junior, one of the largest junior classes of the weekend with 15 starters. Bavineau also recorded a fourth-place result in Jr Heavy.
One spot behind Bavineau in Restricted Junior was Ohio’s Tyler Capodice, who ran his best race of the season to take a third-place result. Capodice is coming on strong on his Coyote after missing the Jacksonville opener.
Also in the Jr (age 12 to 15) classes, Tyler Orlop raced his Coyote chassis to impressive finishes of sixth in Jr Lite and Restricted Junior and fourth in Jr Medium. Orlop now has three top-five finishes in six Gold Cup starts in 2011.
Senior divisions
A couple of races that weren’t as close as the junior mains were Animal Modified Medium and Heavy, which saw Lipari cruise to his third and fourth national wins of the season.
Behind the wheel of his Baker Racing Engines-powered new XP chassis, the 27-year-old racer turned the fastest laps of the weekend around the one-mile course on his way to the pair of victories. Lipari remained undefeated in the Mod categories this season; he also went two for two last month at G&J Raceway in Camden, Ohio.
Coyote drivers continued to race strong in the Animal senior classes.
Rochester, New York’s Dylan Zobkiw had one of the best weekends of any Coyote racer. He finished second to Gary Lawson in Saturday’s Stock Heavy main, a day after rounding out the top five with a fifth-place effort in the 20-lap Animal Heavy Money Race, of which his father John’s company, Year Around Tax Service, is the title sponsor.
Michigan’s Scott Kleman wasn’t able to match his big win in the Stock Medium feature at Camden, Ohio, but the veteran kept himself out front in the Medium point standings with a solid fourth-place finish in the 26-kart main. Unofficially, Kleman has a 10-point lead in Medium over Maryland racer Chris Wells heading into the last Gold Cup national of the season.
Nick Cole scored a pair of top fives on his new XP chassis. Cole ran second in Masters Medium and finished fifth in Stock Heavy.
Wisconsin’s Steven Kilsdonk and New York’s Ben Wagenhals both earned top fives on Coyote karts at New Castle. Kilsdonk finished third in the competitive 16-kart Stock Lite feature, while Wagenhals, who made his return to the series after missing several races, finished a strong fifth in the weekend’s largest class, Stock Medium.
Coyote chassis now have seven national wins in 2011 Gold Cup competition, as well as a number of national victories in the WKA Dunlop Tire Road Racing Series driven by Mazda.
The next road trip for Coyote will be the Gold Cup season closer Sept. 30-Oct. 2 at BeaveRun Motorsports Complex, located about 20 miles north of Pittsburgh in western Pennsylvania.
Coyote Motorsports racers and followers can also look forward to the launching of a brand-new website! The new site will still be located at CoyoteKarts.com, and is expected to be launched this September. An announcement will be released when the new site is live.
