Coyote racers score wins at Concept Haulers, Jacksonville, Barnesville & Monticello in April, May and early June

SPENCERPORT, N.Y. — The 2021 kart racing season is in full swing and over the past few months Coyote Motorsports racers have been busy competing in club, regional and national events across the United States.

Following a huge double-feature-win Cup Karts North America Spring Nationals at Charlotte in March, Coyote teams have shown well at a number of national-level events, including Cup Karts North and South Division races and the Maxxis Sprint Series in the Southeast.

Cup Karts North at Concept Haulers

Next to the Charlotte Spring Nationals, the most attended national event on the schedule during the first half of this year was the CKNA North Division at Concept Haulers Motor Speedway near Norway, Illinois. The event opened Cup Karts’ 2021 four-race North series on the first weekend of May and around 20 Coyote racers challenged for wins and top finishes at the popular Midwest sprint track.

Youngster Jay Boon of Rochester, N.Y., led the way at Norway for Coyote Motorsports. In a competitive LO206 Kid Kart division that featured 12 drivers age 5 to 7, Boon swept the pair of 10-lap feature events in fine fashion on his fast No. 92 Coyote Kid Kart. Boon gained speed and confidence all weekend after qualifying fourth Saturday morning. He’d finish second in the day’s first heat race and go on to win the second heat and dominate the feature, winning by a 4.3-second margin. On Sunday, Jay would sweep the day, winning the Pole Award and finishing first in both heats as well as the main event, this time by a 1-second advantage over second place. Outstanding showing at Concept Haulers, Jay!

Jay’s older brother, Blake Boon, had a very strong weekend in the Junior category, which had 27 racers entering from all over the country. Blake was one of the top juniors all weekend on his Zenith chassis with a P5 finish in Saturday’s final and a strong P2 finish in Sunday’s 10-lap 206 Junior main event. Blake also recorded qualifying results of P3 and P4 and finished inside the top five in three of the four heat races throughout the weekend.

Logan Graham, Jordan Cline and Joey Cline joined Blake in the Junior division on their Coyotes and all had good weekend. Graham and Jordan Cline would finish nose to tail in Saturday’s final in the 11th and 12th positions, respectively. Joey Cline came across the line inside the top 20 in the P19.

In Sunday’s main, Logan and Joey ran in a big pack of juniors around mid pack and would end up finishing 15th and 17th. Jordan had a tough race and had to settle for P22 on this day.

Veteran Tim Stiefel nearly joined Jay Boon on the winners list with strong runs in the new 206 Legends class for drivers age 50 and up. Stiefel wheeled his No. 5 Zenith to final finishes of third Saturday and second Sunday. He led late in the race on Saturday but was shuffled back to third on the last lap. While Stiefel wasn’t able to earn a win, he was super consistent all weekend. He never finished lower than P4 in any round of competition and qualified P2 both days.

Tom VanEynde entered his Coyote in Legends and came away with feature finishes of eighth Saturday and improved to seventh on Sunday. Thirteen drivers entered Legends, which has been a good class in its first season in Cup Karts series racing.

Tim Stiefel also entered Masters along with Paul Dykstra. On Saturday, Stiefel would run 11th and Dykstra 18th in the 20-kart field. Stiefel would skip Sunday’s Masters class and focus solely on Legends. Dykstra carried the Coyote banner and had a good run, finishing 13th in the final.

Similar to Charlotte, Alex Masci was the lone Coyote entrant in Sportsman for drivers age 7 to 12. The class attracted 33 young racers and Masci was in the mix all weekend in his first visit to Concept Haulers. His best run was in Saturday’s second heat where he cracked the top five with a fine P5 result. He’d finish 11th in heat two but he ran into issues in the final and did not finish.

Masci returned Sunday and had a solid day. He’d qualify 17th and improve to 12th and 13th in the heat races. The New York racer would go on to finish in the top half of the field in the Sunday final, taking the 15th spot. Alex continues to gain experience and improve while racing against most of the top young LO206 racers in the country in his rookie season on the circuit.

Kyle Lohmar, Ryan Cassity and Josh Stiefel all netted top-five finishes in the 206 senior categories at Concept Haulers.

Lohmar led the way in Senior Heavy, finishing a strong P4 on Saturday before slipping back to P8 in Sunday’s final. Liam Melsa joined Lohmar in Senior Heavy and he had a decent showing, finishing P13 in each day’s final.

The 27-kart Senior Light class was filled with Coyotes. Josh Stiefel, Cassity, Scott Kleman, Jeremy Mason, Logan Lohmar and Anthony Dimaggio all entered their Coyotes in the division.

Josh had the best day Saturday. After a DQ in qualifying, he fought his way back toward the top of the pack in the heat races, finishing 16th in the first heat and seventh in heat two. He’d move up a few more spots in the feature, racing to an impressive P5 result just ahead of Cassity in P6. Kleman joined the pair in the top 10 with a P8 finish on his familiar red Coyote. Mason was 13th, Logan Lohmar 16th and Dimaggio ran into problems and was a DNF.

Veteran Coyote racer Ryan Cassity still gets the job done on his popular No. 53. After finishing just outside the top five Saturday, Cassity had another solid showing Sunday and would finish an impressive P4 in the 10-lap Senior Light final. Michigan driver Kleman, another longtime Coyote runner, would make it a pair of top 10s on the weekend, finishing 10th. Josh Stiefel slipped to 11th on this day’s Light final with Mason 15th, Logan Lohmar 21st and Dimaggio 23rd.  Great job to all our Senior Light entrants.

Loren Johnson and Trentin Frederick entered their Coyote machines in Senior Medium, another big field with 24 entrants. Both drivers recorded finishes just outside the top 10; Johnson would take 13th on Saturday while Frederick finished 14th in Sunday’s final in his first time at Concept Haulers. While both drivers had an up and down weekend, both showed good speed. Frederick qualified top 10 both days.

Cup Karts North at Whiteland

Paul Dykstra, Scott Kleman and Liam Melsa made the trip with their Coyotes to Whiteland Raceway Park in Indiana for Round 2 of the Cup Karts North Division May 22-23.

Dykstra entered the Masters category and would finish seventh Saturday and sixth on Sunday. Kleman was back on his Coyote in Senior Light. He did not finish Saturday’s main and returned for P8 result in Sunday’s final. Both Dykstra and Kleman are currently seventh in their classes in Cup Kart North points after four of eight race days.

Melsa entered the Senior Heavy division at Whiteland and raced to a P9 finish in Sunday’s final. Melsa currently sits ninth in the CKNA North Senior Heavy point standings with four round complete and four to go.

Three Wins at Maxxis 103rd Street

Further south in the Sunshine State, we take a look back to Saturday, April 10 and the season opener for the Maxxis Sprint Series at the fast 103rd Street Sports Complex in Jacksonville.

Coyote had a great weekend at the Maxxis opener with Mason Donahue, James Inscoe and Tyson Swann all scoring feature wins on their Coyotes.

Riding a Zenith chassis for the first time, Donahue looked great all day. After top-five results in the heat races, the Florida racer made it count in the finals. He’d finish a close second in LO206 Junior Black before racing to a popular win in the LO206 Junior Yellow main event. Great job by Mason putting Coyote in the winners circle at the Maxxis opener!

Joining Donahue on the top step of the podium was 2020 Maxxis Sprint Series champion James Inscoe.  After a P6 finish in the Senior Heavy final earlier in the day, Inscoe won an exciting LO206 Masters main event with a strategic last-lap pass on the race-long leader after riding second and working on him for the entire contest. Inscoe proved what made him a champion last year and did Coyote proud at the 2021 series opener.

While Donahue and Inscoe were winning in the LO206 categories, Tyson Swann had his Coyote Free Roller at the front of the pack in the vintage divisions. Swann would give Coyote three wins at the Maxxis opener with his triumph over eight competitors in the Vintage Stock Heavy feature. Tyson also finished fourth in Vintage Stock Medium.

Tyson would back up his Jacksonville win with another Vintage Stock Heavy feature win at the Maxxis Sprint Round 2 in May at Lamar County Speedway in Barnesville, Ga.  Swann won a close race in a good field of a dozen entrants.

Owen Lloyd, Others Hot on Coyotes in Southeast

Owen Lloyd, plus several others, continues to show out on his Coyote Zenith after scoring wins in the Junior finals at the Cup Karts South opener at Bushnell Motorsports Park in February and at the CKNA Spring Nationals at Charlotte in March.

Lloyd hasn’t slowed down since. He’d finish second in 206 Junior at Cup Karts South Round 2 at Jacksonville in May and return to the top step of the podium with a win at the recent third round of the series Saturday, June 5 at Monticello Karting in Florida. Lloyd won the Pole Award before finishing second in both heat races. He’d work hard to return to the win list in the final, scoring the victory by a close 0.211 second margin over his closest competitor.

Donahue joined Lloyd in Junior on his Zenith at both recent Cup Karts South rounds, coming away with final finishes of P4 at Jax and P6 at Monticello. Elijah Figueroa was also in Junior at Jacksonville. He’d finish P8 in the final.

Chris Carroll, Pauly Massimino, Curtis Gingerich and Austin Hill have all been in action several times this spring on their Performance Precision Karting (PPK) Coyote Zeniths.

Carroll has looked great at both events. The longtime veteran Coyote racer originally from New York and now residing near Charleston, S.C., has been a staple at the front of the pack in both Senior Light and Senior Medium classes.

At 103rd Street, Carroll was on the podium in both classes, finishing P3 in the Light and Medium finals against competitive double-digit entry count fields that featured some of the best LO206 drivers in the business. Massimino was P7 in Light and Josiah Figeuroa was P9. Massimino crossed the finish line third in Senior Medium’s final but was light at the scales. Carroll, who crossed the stripe just behind Pauly, would move up to the third finishing position.

At Monticello, Carroll improved on his Jacksonville finish, piloting his No. 12 Zenith to a fine P2 result in the 15-kart Senior Medium final. Patrick O’Neal finished P12 on his Brad’s Karts & Parts Coyote and Massimino had a mechanical problem and did not finish the Medium final.

Massimino and Hill had good runs in Senior Lite at Monticello. Massimino drove his PPK Coyote Zenith to a P3 result while Hill finished P5 in his Cup Karts South debut and his first ever race on a road course. He consistently ran laps within a half second of the best drivers on the track and many of the best in LO206 racing.

In the Masters category, James Inscoe and Curtis Gingerich both drove to great podium finishes at Monticello. Inscoe would finish a close second and Gingerich third in the 12-lap Masters final, and both crossed the finish line within a second of the winner.

Inscoe and Brad Farmer of Brad’s Karts & Parts also both raced Masters at Jacksonville Cup Kart South. Inscoe finished sixth and Farmer eighth in the competitive field.

Most recently, Inscoe drove to a fine third-place finish in the Masters feature at Charlotte Motor Speedway during the Maxxis Sprint Series national June 18-20.

Roy Avery, Mason Donahue and Ronnie Klys joined Inscoe on Coyotes at Charlotte for the Maxxis race. For Klys, it was his debut on a Coyote Zenith and he gained experience on the chassis in the junior divisions all weekend. His best run was a P5 finish in Saturday’s Junior Yellow final.

Avery nearly won Sunday’s Masters feature. In a race that started in the rain, the track dried throughout the race and Avery made hard charge to the front over the final several laps. He’d make it to third on the final lap and nearly caught the two leaders before the checkers waved. He’d settle for a fine P3 finish and make it on the podium.

Donahue showed some great speed at Charlotte in the two junior divisions and had a good Sunday in the back-and-forth rain and dry conditions. He’d end up finishing P3 in both the Junior Yellow and Junior Black finals, and also won the Yellow heat race and Pole Award. Mason continues to impress in his first season on a Coyote Zenith.
